Fiber Futures, Design Museum, until May 5

One of the main catalysts driving today's fashion industry is fibre and in this area, the Japanese are the undisputed leaders. The Fiber Futures travelling exhibition, which can currently be seen at the Helsinki Design Museum, is a unique opportunity to find out about Japan's textile art traditions. The Japanese have a particular feel for fibre, manifested through a mix of unique artistic liberties and technological virtuosity. Works by different generations of Japanese textile artists are represented here, with such age-old materials as hemp fabric, cotton and silk being exhibited together with the latest hi-tech variations. The exhibition shows that one of the foundations for the success of the Japanese textile industry is its perpetual drive to experiment - be it in the search for unusual materials or an extreme and contrasting mix of the old and the new. The exhibition has been organized by the New York Japan Society, the Tama Art University (Tokyo) and the International Textile Network Japan.
