ZAZ, European Tour. 4 May – 22 July, 2012

2011 was a year packed with giddy success in the career of the rising French jazz star Zaz. Last year the singer was nominated for two Victoires de la Musique awards, the French equivalent of the prestigious Grammy Award. The jury declared Zaz the 'Newcomer of the Year' while her Je Veux was crowned the 'Song of the Year'.
Early this year the singer won the European Border Braker Adward, a prize awarded annually to ten young individual artists or bands to mark their international success.
Zaz (real name - Isabelle Geffroy) was born in 1980, in the French city of Tours, to a family of a teacher and an electric engineer. The young artist acquired considerable academic polish to her musical talent at the elitist Tours Academy of Music where she studied the piano, strings and choral singing. Soon enough Zaz's artistic progress won some academic acclaim, and she was awarded a scholarship for studies at the Centre for Musical Activities and Information, a modern music institute in Bordeaux focusing on blues, Cuban rhythms, Latin jazz and flamenco. Zaz went on to discover new horizons in Paris where she performed on cabaret and tavern stages accompanied by a small big bands, filling the streets of Montmartre with joyous melodies.
The year 2010 for Zaz was marked by a brilliant debut: the singer announced herself with her first single, released under the title of Je Veux; her first studio album ZAZ followed suit. The debut album took the top spot in French and Belgian pop charts, one of the top places in the Swiss Top 10 and became the most downloaded iTunes album in Germany. Thanks to the support of Zaz's local fans, her first single held on to the No. One position of the SNEP charts for nine weeks running. Her debut album won a Diamond Disc certification in France while bringing the singer a Platinum Disc in Belgium, Switzerland and Poland. The virtual popularity of Zaz's music is also growing: the video to her Je Veux on YouTube has been viewed 10 million times and counting.
The unique quality of the charismatic singer's velvety voice and her skills of using it like a musical instrument have charmed her listeners, taking the world by storm. Zaz's performance captivates with its charge of energy and enthusiasm, her powerful and enjoyably effortless vocals. Jazz, blues, chanson, African, Andalusian, Brazilian and Latin American inspirations blend together to create a sort of manouche-jazz unique to Zaz alone, evoking a vintage Parisian feel in the lower range and referencing modern eclecticism in its rhythms. The one thing that Zaz is most definitely not is yet another product of the notorious 'fifteen minutes of fame'.
