The Second Purvītis Prize, Arsenāls Exhibition Hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art, 19 February – 10 April

The Second Purvītis Prize will be awarded at the opening of the group show by the Purvītis Prize candidates at 18:00, 18 February 2011.
The prize is awarded biennially to an artist or a group of artists that receive the highest rating from a panel of judges. The prize will henceforth be awarded every two years to an artist or a group of artists representing Latvia with an outstanding work. The author rated highest by a panel of experts and a special international jury will be selected as the winner; the prize money will amount to LVL 20 000 (approximately EUR 28 450).
The fact that the new-founded award was named after the grand master of Latvian painting Vilhelms Purvītis (1872-1945), who has become a symbol of national identity both in the history of Latvian art and in the eyes of the general public and won acclaim both at home and on the international art scene, is no coincidence.
The winner of the Second Purvītis Prize will be chosen by a jury after evaluating the work of the eight shortlisted candidates as presented at their group exhibition at the Arsenāls Exhibition Hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art. The show will be on view from February 18 through April 10, 2011. The exhibition consists of expressive examples of painting, photography, installations and video art created by the eight artists nominated by the experts in 2009 and 2010: - Ilmārs Blumbergs, Kristīne Kursiša, Kristaps Ģelzis, Imants Lancmanis, Kaspars Podnieks, Mārtiņš Ratniks, Inta Ruka and Krišs Salmanis. Daiga Rudzāte is the curator of the exhibition.
-The Jury of the 2011 Purvītis Prize, appointed to select this year's winner, will comprise seven Latvian and three international representatives - Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia Sarmīte Ēlerte, director of the Latvian National Museum of Art Māra Lāce, chairman of the Board of SIA Alfor Jānis Zuzāns, art historian, Professor of the Latvian Academy of Arts, Dr hab. Eduards Kļaviņš, art curator and theoretician Helēna Demakova, art curator and theoretician Inga Šteimane, art collector Andris Kļaviņš, art historian, critic and curator Anda Rottenberg (Poland), curator of the Hermitage 20/21 contemporary art project at the State Hermitage Dr. Dmitry Ozerkov (Russia), art historian and chief curator of the Lithuanian National Gallery of Art, Dr. Lolita Jablonskienė.
The Purvītis Prize contest in visual arts is held by the Latvian National Museum of Art in association with the SIA Alfor company, the patron of the Museum. Implementation of the Purvītis Prize contest is carried out by culture project agency "INDIE" and public relations company P.R.A.E.
The Purvītis Prize was founded as an initiative of the Latvian National Museum of Art with the support of SIA Alfor Company, the patron of the Museum, in early 2008. The objective of the Latvian National Museum of Art in founding a new visual arts prize is to gather regular and systematic information about the most recent visual arts events in Latvia, promote development of new projects and original ideas, acknowledge the best achievements in Latvian professional visual arts and popularise the success of Latvian artists.
