The New Norwegian Opera building

The new Norwegian Opera building in Oslo is officially opening its door on 12 April. The project designed by the Norwegian Snøhetta architecture practice cost approximately EUR 500 million and is the most ambitious and expensive recent culture project in the country. The new opera house covers an area of 38 500 m² and comprises 1100 separate rooms; the main auditorium seats 1358. The new Oslo opera house's pride is one of the most modern stages in the world as well as its outstanding acoustic qualities; each seat in the main auditorium is equipped with facilities for translating the libretto into eight languages. The roof of the laconic minimalist building is made of white marble and will be open to the public as a view platform. The new Oslo opera house will open with a performance of A Modern Place, a ballet by the Norwegian choreographer Ingun Bjørnsgaard.
