Ars Homo Erotica. National Museum, 11 June – 5 September
The new exhibition on view at the Warsaw National Museum is the first Eastern European show dedicated to the subject of homosexuality in art. The title clearly outlines the story of the show: it deals with art as a reflection of same-sex desire and love. The fact is made even more significant by the fact that the exhibition is running in Poland, the Warsaw National Museum - one of the staunchest strongholds of Catholicism. What is more, its opening coincides with the early presidential election in which the successor of the former Polish head of state (also the sometime Mayor of Warsaw) Lech Kaczynski will be chosen; Kaczynski died in the tragic Smolensk plane crash in April. July will see Warsaw host the Europe Gay Pride 2010, an event that, like the Ars Homo Erotica exhibition, is made somewhat scandalously intriguing by the fact that in 2004 and 2005 Kaczynski, then Warsaw Mayor, banned the annual Gay Pride events in the Polish capital.
The exhibition aims at challenging the viewers to take a look at the European history of culture from a different angle. The show comprises nine subsections featuring works of art that date from antiquity to the present. The majority of exhibits are part of the National Museum holdings; however, a number of contemporary artists were also invited and some works were borrowed from prestigious international art institutions. The exhibition is an encounter of myths and history on the one side and contemporary art manifestations on the other; in a way, it could be described as a unique debate on the manifestations and rules of contemporary democracy.
