Golden Mask Theatre Festival. 3 February – 16 April

The annual Golden Mask Theatre Festival, which takes place every spring in Moscow, showcases the best productions of the Russian theatre season; the main programme comprises works nominated for the Golden Mask national theatre award. This year, the selection was made from 655 productions by theatre companies based in Saint Petersburg, Moscow and many other Russian cities. Alongside the stage works nominated for the Golden Mask national theatre award, the festival also features the Mask Plus programme, dedicated to interesting productions, not always qualified to be nominated by the panel of experts and yet equally worthy of attention; this year's bill includes Finer Noble Gases, a JRT theatre production from Riga (director Alvis Hermanis). Other events include the Russian Case programme aimed at the international viewer; running from 8 to 12 April, it comprises a number of distinctive and unusual works.
The Legendary Productions of the 20th Century programme presents recent significant productions from other parts of the world; this year, the American choreographer Mark Morris is bringing to Moscow his version of Dido and Æneas.
While the official opening date of the Golden Mask festival is 27 March, the Premieres of the Saint Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre in Moscow programme, comprising performances of Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Frau ohne Schatten and The Little Humpbacked Horse ballet by Rodion Schedrin, as well as a night of one-act ballets, is opening on 31 January. Early February will also bring performances of the Mask Plus programme productions at various Moscow venues.
