Picasso and Modern British Art, Tate Britain, February 17 – July 15, 2012
Over the next five months, Tate Britain is presenting an extensive exhibition devoted to Pablo Picasso's relationship with British modern art. The work of this eccentric painter once raised great controversy in Great Britain, giving rise to both glowing praise and harsh criticism. The well-known British artist David Hockney, for example, was so enthralled by Picasso's exhibition at the Tate Britain in 1960 that he went to see see it eight times. That represented the start of Hockney's lifelong obsession with Picasso's art. Along with 60 paintings by Picasso, the exhibition will also feature the works of seven British artists (including David Hockney, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon and Ben Nicholson). These works either have been inspired by Picasso or are devoted to him. In total, more than 150 oeuvres will be on display, on loan from both renowned museums and private collectors. A special section will be devoted to the time when Picasso stayed in London to create the stage set and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev's ballet, Three-Cornered Hat (1919).
