The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), The Broad Contemporary Art Museum

On 16 February the public will finally be able to see with their own eyes the transformations undergone by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The first phase of construction work under the guidance of the internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano is over (the whole reconstruction project of the art institution is scheduled to be completed by 2010): among a number of other objects, the building of Bcam or the Broad Contemporary Art Museum - the museum of the famous art collectors Edythe and Eli Broad - and the open-air Grand Entrance pavilion sponsored by British Petroleum are ready to be officially unveiled. The Broads who have invested 56 million dollars in the construction of the museum building and donated 10 million dollars for the acquisition of works of art (the Band sculpture by Richard Serra and one of the famous Mappa del Mondo series embroidered maps of the world by Alighiero Boetti). Only a year ago Eli Broad promised to donate his approximately 2000-item collection of modern and contemporary art to a museum or museums, and the Los Angeles Museum of Art, of course, was one of the strongest contenders. But recently the art world was surprised by the news that Broad intends to retain control over the collection, offering museums (first of all, LACMA) an option of borrowing individual works of art instead. The basis of the collection consists of post-1960 works rooted in the tradition of Pop Art, including the creations of Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and other artists. The Broads also own examples of the 1980s stars Jean-Michel Basquiat's and Julian Schnabel's art.
The exhibition room of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum covers an area of 58 000 square feet - twice as much as the total area of the New York Whitney Museum of American Art. The opening exhibition, comprising 120 works from the Broads' collection, 10 exhibits from the permanent exposition of the Los Angeles Museum of Art and 20 exhibits owned by other collectors, will be on view in six rooms.
