Heritage Suites Hotel

Frenchman Didier Faraud has been living in Cambodia for 14 years - with the exception of a few longer or shorter periods; Heritage Suites Hotel is his pet project and an embodiment of the best qualities of Oriental design. The hotel (20 garden bungalows and six rooms) is a five minute tuk-tuk drive from the old town centre and makes you feel as if you were close to the epicentre of life and "away from it all" at the same time: in the real, the more authentic Siem Reap where the natural flow of things never stops - freshly fried vegetables always steaming away on a tiny cooker on a street corner, boys playing football, sounds of a prayer gong coming from a nearby temple... You would do well to choose one of the three Royal Suites: you will have at your disposal not only a 150 m² room with a separate lounge area - easily transformable into a nursery - but also a small garden complete with a Jacuzzi; the glass wall the length of the room creates an illusion of letting the outdoors inside. Still, the most important thing is a private vapour bath; do give it a go in the middle of the day, after a tour of the temples: the lemon grass fragrance and immersing yourself into the white oval tub (you will find it right there in your room) create a pleasant refreshing sense of coolness.
Heritage Suites Hotel also boasts a saltwater pool and a restaurant with an excellent kitchen. It is definitely one of those places that promises and delivers real pleasure in the literal sense of the word. You are sure to meet Didier in person - at night he is often at the hotel bar with his two boys. His latest project is Heritage Adventures (www.heritage-adventures.com, see "Things to Do"), the first tailor-made tourist agency in Cambodia. Alongside trips to remote temples - not listed in popular travel guides - in the company of a French guide with a PhD in archaeology, it also offers a luxury backpacking experience in the Cambodian jungle which involves sleeping in a tent, a personal chef and an exclusive supper as well as some fine champagne. Prior to moving to Cambodia Didier worked as a sound engineer; well, one thing must be said for him - he knows how to conjure up an ambience, even in the middle of nowhere!
