Shanghai Old Station Restaurant

The name of the place speaks eloquently for itself. Shanghai Old Station Restaurant is set in a historic, 19th century railway station building - its vast waiting-room is now turned into a dining hall, but you can book a table in one of the railway carriages as well, or enjoy an even greater intimacy in a small private compartment. The restaurant's décor doesn't strike with a distinctive Asian style, and only few photos on the walls speak of the previous life of this place, but a glass wall offers a lovely view of a beautiful courtyard and a garden.
The restaurant amazes with an outstanding Shanghai cuisine. Be sure to try its soups - jellyfish soup or pumpkin soup with crab meat balls, for instance, and an incredible variety of fish and seafood, which makes an old station a perfect choice for lunch and dinner. You can also have a fabulous, perfectly prepared duck!
It makes you forget your European ego and amazes with a precise, tradition-based table culture. Portions are pretty small, a meal should suit the occasion, and even a number of dishes has its significance. Bear in mind also that rice is rather a staple food to satisfy one's hunger, not a part of an exquisite cuisine. Another peculiarity is that soup is served at the end of the meal, but green tea is drunk without any limitations, the same way as we drink mineral water.
