Darjeeling Planters' Club

The Tea Planters' Club was founded in 1868 and was at the time literally the meeting place of the Darjeeling elite. On special occasions tea growers and dealers from all over the region gathered at the club. Some of the old ambience is still there. You can have a glass of beer or a light lunch having paid a symbolic member's fee for one day: the concierge will collect it with an air of dignity and self-importance. And that's about all that remains of the former splendour. Well, actually, it is still all there - hidden under a thick cultural layer. The place looks as if it hadn't been touched since Indian independence. Time devours everything, including these velvet drapes, billiard room and a snarling stuffed leopard above the fireplace. The Planters' Club terrace is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine or beer and lazily watch the hustle and bustle of the city at your feet.
