Set in the more than 300-year old former residence of the town's mayor, SiolimHouseis like a treasure trove full of surprising details. When in 1996 the building was bought by an Indian family, the house became the favourite destination of so many friends of the family that it soon became clear: the seven spacious rooms of Siolim House have to become a source of inspiration for guests who would appreciate the painstaking restoration carried out with immense respect for authenticity and utmost care to preserve the added value of natural materials - helping them breathe and serve again.
Siolim House, a gem among other Indian heritage hotels, is a unique example of Goan and Portuguese architecture and interior design. Some of the rooms feature stone tile mosaics, some - polished wood floors which, just like the wood doors, are, to a Latvian traveller, reminiscent of the painter Boriss Bērziņš' attempts to create a unique dark brown lustrous surface texture in his works.
And yet the most extraordinary feature of the building is its windows, unique to historical Goan architecture. The specifically shaped frames are filled with a mosaic of oyster shells cut into rectangular strips; at night the windows glitter like pearls; during the daylight hours they let in just enough light while remaining completely opaque.
Spaciousness and solidity are two of the most typical traits of Siolim House. Bathrooms measure up to 20 square metres in area; living rooms are furnished with capacious Indian wardrobes and large four-poster beds. For some intellectual pleasure it is well worth the while to visit the extensive hotel library which carries outstandingly good art and fiction books.
The hotel is amazingly comfortable. You will also be able to spend a carefree day with your family at the comparatively nearby beach (do bring your own beach towels as they are not provided by the hotel); a taxi procured by Alex the Hotel Manager will take you there. Before you leave for the beach, do lock the door of your room with a padlock, a tradition at Indian hotels.
