Akal

Akal is one of those stores where you are overcome by the genuine joy of a discoverer - one of the best places in Goa - and perhaps in the whole of India - to go shopping for designer-grade scarves. The owner, a charming Italian lady, has been living in India for almost thirty years; her boutique - which also doubles as the designer's home - is located in the village of Calangute; however, it is so well-hidden that you wouldn't find it if you didn't know where to look. There is no sign outside, so you should do well to call prior to your visit. The shelves are packed with scarves galore, and you are free to explore, try on and spends as much time in this treasure trove as you like. And, while you are at it, you can also have a nice chat with the owner.
You are not likely to leave empty-handed. Akal specialises in wool scarves; however, the collection does also feature linen, cashmere and silk. The designer's imagination seems to be boundless where the patterns and the techniques are concerned. The double-sided silk/rayon and wool scarves are truly the gem of the collection, their vivid patterns somewhat reminiscent of Missoni, the famous Italian fashion house, invoking light nostalgia. Excellent value for money: a linen scarf costs an average of Rs 900; the prices of wool scarves range from Rs 10 00 to 12 00. A scarf from Akal is a wonderful souvenir and an excellent investment in your wardrobe. The shop is definitely worth visiting and revisiting again.
