The Cheshire Car jewellery gallery is set in the small and comparatively quiet Goan village of Assagao, housed in an old Portuguese villa. As likely as not, you will be greeted at the door by one of the two owners, either the Dutch jewellery designer Cornelis van Andel or his wife Karen Peace. Karen hails from the UK and she is running the tiny gallery/showroom featuring both their own jewellery collections - the luxury Andel&Peace, mostly gold, silver and precious stones, and the more friendly-priced Cheshire Cat Collection - and jewellery by other local designers (Nathan Mealey, Emma Tyson, Amalia Mala). The sources of inspiration vary from traditional Indian motifs to Victoriana, albeit with a markedly contemporary accent. The designer Amanila Mala offers, among other things, contemporary versions of mala - prayer beads - from precious stones and seeds of the rudraksha tree. An adjacent room features clothes and accessories by Pink India. Every once in a while, the Cheshire Cat gallery also hosts various exhibitions.
