Fort House, Fort Kochi

This is definitely the ultimate gem of the budget accommodation scene in Cochin - a waterfront guesthouse quite close to the legendary Chinese fishing nets. Nine side-by-side cottages (there is sure to be more of them very soon since building and decoration was in full blast fairly recently) - sadly, not one of them with a sea view, a drawback more than compensated by the Fort House fish restaurant (one of the best in Cochin) and its waterfront terrace, an excellent place to watch the local fishermen cast their nets or ships entering the Cochin harbour. Your room is going to be as ascetic as they come (and just as impeccably clean): just a bed with a mosquito net (there are a lot of these bloodthirsty insects due to the proximity of water), white bed sheets, a small wardrobe and the modcons. Then again - what else does one really need? The rates differ depending on whether you need air conditioning in your room. Unlike most Indian hotels, you won't be asked for your credit card number, a deposit or anything like that as you book your room; all you will be kindly told is that you are welcome to come and stay.
