There is one thing you have to accept before you set off to countries like India, otherwise your trip will be a hopeless failure: you can't expect everything to be perfect or near-perfect. It just wouldn't be fair. That also goes for Shalimar Spice Garden, a twenty-cottage hotel in jungly mountains, an ideal place to indulge in spice craze in Kumily and visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve. It was opened ten years ago by an Italian designer who turned the place into one of the most authentic and, at the same time, uniquely designed accommodation venues in India. However, a few years ago she sold the property which is now owned by an Indian hotel chain. The place is obviously timeworn but still charming: the carefully tended garden of exotic trees and herbs, the restaurant that serves excellent food, the staff who go out of their way to assist you any way they can - it is all there. And you immediately excuse the slightly murky swimming pool and the somewhat tatty sofa cover as soon as you set foot in the other hotel in the vicinity, the Spice Garden with its manicured lawn and nauseatingly western ambience.
