It's like finding Aladdin's treasure cave in the very heart of Mumbai, just a short way from Regal Cinema and a popular Indigo Deli eatery. Yet be sure to enter the right door - that of D.Popli & Sons, not the next one, entitled just Popli. At first glimpse it doesn't even give that impression, yet soon you'll discover that a little shop is a genuine treasure chest. Immersing in it, you can lose hours if not days, suddenly feeling like Alice in her fairytale land beyond the looking glass. Glass showcases form only a small visible part of the shop, while heaps of treasures are hiding in numerous small drawers, brimming with silver and gold jewelry, pearls, precious and semiprecious gemstones - bracelets, necklaces, rings, broaches and much more. When you have already spent a good amount of time digging your dazzled glance into each drawer, the owner comes up and, as if by mere chance, fishes out even more exquisite items from secret drawers, which no one but himself knows about... D.Popli & Sons is a family owned business, operating since 1928. Even though its specialty is Victorian- and traditional Indian style jewelry, one can find also unorthodox contemporary design jewelry there, claiming artwork status. Almost each piece is done in only a small number of copies and can be considered to be one of a kind. The shop features also various design items with beautiful antique vases among them.
The best clients are treated to a cup of very good espresso, perhaps one of the best you can get in India.
