Samode Haveli, Jaipur

This is the city residence of the Samode royal family, built more than 150 years ago by Rawal Sheo Singh, then Prime Minister of Jaipur (see Samode Palace). It was converted into a hotel in 1988 and is located in a strategically perfect place, in the heart of Jaipur. After less than an hour in the hustle and bustle of Jaipur you will feel like on a different planet - it's all peace and quiet. Not a sound of the ever-present background of hooting and yelling, although the street is only a few metres away. Our driver jokes that you need three things when travelling by car in India: excellent brakes, a loud horn and lots of good luck.
As befits a city residence, the splendour of the Samode Haveli interior seems somewhat quieter and toned down compared to that of Samode Palace. The pride of the family is not forgotten, however: two of the suites are decorated with mirrors. No other excessive pomposity, though. The décor is the embodiment of good taste. Excellent renovation job, lots of original antique objects and works of art - including family portraits - in all 29 rooms. The true gem of the hotel is its swimming pool and the four sofas (practically enough room for four people on each of them) in the shade next to it. It is the ultimate pleasure - lounging in the cushions and reading a book (ideally an India-themed one). Or simply just space out for a while, finally accepting that it's impossible to see everything anyway, least of all in India.
