Cholamandal Artists' Village, Chennai

Chennai is a major cultural center in India and the Artists' Village, established next to it in 1966 - the largest artists' commune in India. It's credited for the growth and development of the Madras Movement of Art (1950s-1980s) that brought modernism to South India. In the 70's, Cholamandal Artists' Village became a crossroads and the most significant meeting point for the local and international art. It is also one of the few art communities that have survived for over 4 decades. Although Cholamandal Artists' Village, encircled by beautiful woodland, seems somewhat belonging to the past now, you can enjoy a peaceful walk there, savor fine offering of its museums and art galleries and finally treat yourself to delightful moments at an idyllic café.
