Maison Souvannphoum

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Maison Souvannphoum is one of the Luang Prabang hotels mentioned most often. There are a number of reasons for that. Firstly, it is housed at the former residence of Prince Souvanna Phouma. Secondly... ah yes, Sir Mick Jagger, the frisky gramps of Rock 'n' Roll, stayed here during his visit to Laos. The list of VIP guests also includes the Hitchcock blonde Kim Novak. Besides, it's the only hotel in the city which can boast a swimming pool of its own - as befits a former prince's residence. Maison Souvannphoum is owned by Colours of Angsana, the sibling company of the renowned Asian luxury chain Banyan Tree. The interior is quite traditional, with just a touch of contemporary design. The colour scheme is dominated by dark wood, reds and greens; the building is influenced by the French colonial style of architecture. You may be left slightly bewildered by the pronounced perfection of literally everything, including the tiniest of details and the service. Not that we are complaining - you will be taken excellent care of; your every wish will be guessed before you even open your mouth. And yet a nagging sense of being enveloped by a cocoon of luxury, completely cut off from the world outside, may persist - particularly if you choose to spend a day by the (relatively smallish) pool in the company of French wines, cocktails and appetisers served by the Elephant Blanc Café restaurant. Maison Souvannphoum offers 24 rooms, most of them with separate balconies, as well as a spa.
