Hotel La Résidence Phou Vao

Hotel La Résidence Phou Vao, owned by the Orient Express chain, is the ideal accommodation if you feel like running away from it all - at least for a couple of days. The place offers Asian design at its best: peace, quiet and all sorts of pleasures for all of your senses (even if you don't feel like visiting the spa, one of the best in Luang Prabang). The hilltop La Résidence Phou Vao is located just outside the city borders in a breathtakingly beautiful location. You would do particularly well to choose a room with a view of the mountains; it will allow you to start each morning with a steaming cup of fragrant tea on your private terrace, watching the awakening of the day. Like everything else in Luang Prabang, the day takes its time to really come alive - as late as 11 am the mountains and the city are still enveloped in a light gauzy haze to be dissolved only very gradually. The room is separated from the terrace by a glass wall which makes it seem even more spacious. At night La Résidence Phou Vao is the ideal vantage point for sundown watching; the warm light of the setting sun wraps the city as subtly and elusively as it did at dawn. Every tiny detail is well considered and thought out: the pool is a true gem of design, suddenly interrupted by the edge of a steep slope. At night the deck chairs are replaced by restaurant tables and the water is adorned by dozens of floating candles on an invisible string. To keep you warm during the dinner, a brazier full of smouldering coals is placed next to each table. There is just one downside to the place: La Résidence Phou Vao is located outside the city and to get there you will need to avail of a car provided by the hotel or a tuk-tuk; it is definitely too far to walk. And another thing - you may not feel you are staying specifically in Luang Prabang; actually, it could be any Asian city. Therefore, if you are planning to stay for at least a week and feel eager to sample the true charm of Luang Prabang, don't choose this hotel as your only accommodation - do stay for a few nights at Apsara or Les 3 Nagas.
