L'Eléphant

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

A trip to Luang Prabang just wouldn't be complete without a visit to this restaurant. Without a shadow of a doubt, L'Eléphant is one of the best restaurants in the city - if you belong to those who would like to sample a bit of its colonial past. L'Eléphant is a tiny bit of Paris in the middle of Luang Prabang - a bit of slightly Lao Paris. The head chef and co-owner of the restaurant was born in Laos and educated at a culinary school in Switzerland, spent some time working at a number of European restaurants and eventually moved to Paris where he met his partner Gilles Vautrin. L'Eléphant was opened in his grandmother's house, previously renovated and converted into a restaurant. The decor is slightly reminiscent of a classic French brasserie.
With its perfect service and excellent atmosphere L'Eléphant is permanently jam-packed so do book a table in advance. The first thing you are served as soon as you have made your order is fresh French bread, still piping hot from the oven. It doesn't taste as good even in Paris. The menu is in French and English and the food is dominated by a strong French accent: frog legs, Dijon mustard - it's all there, as well as excellent local fish from the Mekong River. An excellent bouquet of flavours. On the other hand - a boat trip on the Mekong with its riverside patches where the locals grow greens and herbs or an early morning visit to the Luang Prabang market is enough to realise why the food here is so good. A good choice of wine. There is also some Lao fare on offer, and yet - perhaps L'Eléphant is not the place for you if you feel like sampling some authentic local food: you have to visit Les 3 Nagas (see below) - owned, by the way, by the same people, as is Le Café Ban Wat Sene.
