Sursock Museum

The Sursock Museum is one of the most popular museums in Beirut and is Lebanon's principal, modern art museum. It is located in the former Sursock family villa, which was built during the 19th century in the elegant Achrafieh quarter, formerly known as Le Quartier.
The building's ornate, Eclectic architecture shows influences from the Venetian and Ottoman architectural styles. In 1961, Nicolas Sursock, who was a member of one of Lebanon's most prominent aristocratic families, bequeathed his mansion to the City of Beirut for the purpose of housing an art museum. Since then, more than a hundred exhibitions have been held there, displaying the works of both Lebanese and international artists. The museum collection consists of about 5000 pieces, including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, glassware and iconography, dating from the 18th to the 20th centuries. In addition to modern art, the museum's permanent collection also includes Japanese engravings and Islamic art.
