1929

The 1929 Hotel is a real gem, mostly thanks to the owner's - a lawyer-become-restaurateur's - passion for chair collecting. The relatively small hotel - 32 rooms - is located in the heart of Chinatown, in the former red light district, and was created by converting and merging five former shop buildings.
You will feel the flavour of the place as soon as you step into the lobby: it looks like a smallish hall of a private living house decorated, due to certain peculiarities of the owner's personality, with a 1970s dentist's chair and other bizarre objects appreciated by a true connoisseur of the fine art of furniture-making. His collection is a real museum of chair design, from Joseph Hoffmann 1910 Cubus Sofa to Arne Jacobsen's Swan and Egg chairs, Pierre Paulin's Tulip and Verner Panton. The design of each room is different (and each is furnished with different chairs). And then there are the seemingly small aesthetic nuances of Marimekko bed covers and bathrooms with glass walls that do the trick of optically enlarging the space. For the ultimate design experience, choose one of the top floor apartments (with a roof garden and outdoors bathroom); the rest are comparatively small, although decorated with taste and flair.
Another strong point: the Ember Restaurant at the 1929 Hotel is among the most stylish in the city (and always cram-full): Vintage Louis Poulsen lamps, cream and dark wood chairs, fusion cuisine. The head chef was previously employed at Four Seasons and the Raffles Hotel.
