The Scarlet

You can't miss The Scarlet on the small Erskine Road; red is everywhere: the carpets, the vases at the entrance, the cushions, sofas and chairs... Decadent extravagance or Moulin Rouge married to Art Deco: that about describes The Scarlet. Sounds improbable? Smells like kitsch? You are greeted by a concierge in a livery (black with a red collar), and the first thing that sticks in your mind is the crystal chandelier and the gold "waterfall" in an alcove by the entrance. A play of textures dominates the interior: faux snakeskin, leather, suede, silk, velvet, organza... Surprisingly enough, the owners have managed to keep their balance and stay on the thin red line that separates nuanced 'taste and pomposity. The Scarlet Hotel was created by merging a number of historic buildings owned by Chinese traders, built in 1860 and 1920. It is strategically placed, a couple of yards from Chinatown (if you happen to be interested in Oriental medicine, you will find one of the best pharmacies in Singapore on your way); the business district is also quite close. In the string of the nearby small and stylish galleries you may find quite a few tasteful things you have been looking for in vain in the famous shopping paradise of Orchard Road.
At the Scarlet Hotel everything is always in the name. The menu of the Desire Restaurant is slightly reminiscent of the Agent Provocateur lingerie store in London. The Breeze Bar is located on the roof, and the view is priceless: not only rows of skyscrapers but also the historic buildings of the Chinese Quarter. And one of the most delicious Singapore Slings in the city. The good old recipe of the Raffle cocktail (see Long Bar) has been slightly modified: the old fashioned powdery sweetness is replaced by a 21st century freshness.
Five of the 79 Scarlet Hotel rooms are suites: Splendour, Opulent, Lavish, Swank and Passion. And don't be surprised if you find a couple of the latest issues of some watch-making magazines next to the fruit bowl: in Singapore, as we all know, all the best in the trade is available - comparatively reasonably priced at that.
In any case - this is a hotel for pleasure, not for business.

Rates: standard room SGD 200, suite SGD 500.
