After wandering the cafés leaves you looking for just the right evening note, it can be found at the striking Loos Bar, the "American bar" off the Kärntner Straße (at). This is most definitely not a place that attracts a passing trade. Adolf Loos's uncompromisingly modernist 1908 interior is authentic to the last drop. As tends to be the case in such a classic place, time means nothing. Quite tiny at 27 square metres, the Loos Bar offers only three glimmering white tables in an atmosphere dark with time-tested, distilled, even minimalistic romance. Here you can find such romanticism as functionalism can contain and accentuate, all that's superfluous being cast aside. This is the very opposite of the pompous grandeur of bourgeois Vienna. Not to be missed; the only caveat is that such a tiny space is best savoured at off times. Sunday afternoon, slipping from a late morning into an early evening, might indeed be best.
