Kiasma, designed by American architect Steven Holl and opened in 1998, houses the contemporary art collection of the Finnish National Gallery. The location and design of the museum building initially provoked much controversy among Helsinki denizens; after completion, however, the structure proved successful and has now become one of Helsinki's signature landmarks and the most popular museum in Finland. The museum presents a broad programme of exhibitions and interdisciplinary art projects, as well as many other artistic, theatre, dance, music, media art and film events, thus claiming its place as a centre of the current and contemporary culture of the city. It is a venue for public meetings with artists, various conferences, festivals, lectures and workshops. Kiasma is a multifunctional exhibition space, where the permanent collection is displayed alongside various temporary exhibits and a multitude of cultural events. The larger themed exhibitions run for considerable stretches of time of up to a year, with smaller exhibits and performances changing more often. Kiasma aims to approach the events and phenomena of today through direct reaction and commentary.
