Café Engel

Perfectly located just across the Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral, Café Engel is undoubtedly one of the most charming cafes of the city! Those, who are lucky to get a window table, can contemplate the vibrant flow of life, like ever-changing movie outside. Especially it's true about warm summer afternoons when steps of the nearby cathedral become a beloved place to celebrate sunshine. Some guidebook has afforded a joke telling that, while the capacity of the cathedral is 1300 seats, the number of people preferring its stairs quite often is almost the same.
Café Engel is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Helsinki, its ground floor being built in 1765. Two more floors were added by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel (1778-1840), who has designed all the most significant 18th century neoclassicism style buildings around the Senate Square - Helsinki University, the Cathedral and the Senate, or as it's called now, the Palace of the Council of State.
The café has two halls - the first one, more laidback, features old wooden floors, round-corner tables and an old clock that has long since ceased to count the time, while the other one splashes elegant, white-clad tables. Its inner yard in summertime is turned into the only outdoor cinema in Finland. The café is much favored by students of the nearby university and creative people of the city, and the prices, comparing with other Helsinki eateries, are quite democratic (espresso - 2.90 Euro, cappuccino - 3.90 Euro, Cesar salad 12 Euro, mozzarella salad - 10 Euro). Café Engel is a good choice for a late and slow breakfast, a special 11 Euro breakfast offer being available on workdays from 8am to 12pm, on Saturdays from 9am to 2pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 3pm.
