Hiekka Art Museum (Hiekan taidemuseo)

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Named after the esteemed Finnish goldsmith, art collector and world traveller Kustaa Hiekka, this museum was established in 1931 to display its founder's impressive art collection. Along with traditional paintings and sculptures, the museum also showcases antique furniture, coins, silverware, tin and glass objects, as well as ethnographic items.

The bulk of the collection features works by Finnish artists from the 1850s to the present. The Biedermeyer period is represented by the works of Ferdinand von Wright. The era of romantic landscapes can be found in paintings by Berndt Lindholm and Hjalmar Munsterhjelm. The so-called Golden Age of Finnish art, on the other hand, is shown in the works of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Eero Järnefelt, Pekka Halonen and Hugo Simberg.
