Grasse is the heart of the French perfume industry. Almost all the legendary names of French perfume houses are closely linked to this area - starting from Guerlain and Patou to Rochas and Hermès. The house of Chanel owns a large rose plantation in Grasse neighborhood, with obtained there essences being used exclusively for Chanel perfumes. Even the legendary Chanel N. 5 was created there! Although the city itself does not shine among the most popular French Riviera destinations, the International Perfume Museum, inaugurated in 1989, lures those who wish to glance behind the veil, hiding the magical world of perfumes. The museum's vast collection retraces the history of perfumes and secrets of their making over 4 thousand years. It features also thematic exhibitions on regular basis.
