Windsor Hotel, Nice

The close connection between some of the 20th-century's greatest artists and the French Riviera is a well-known phenomenon, and in a sense, the Windsor Hotel is a continuation of this relationship. Built at the end of the 19th century and designed by a student of Gustav Eiffel, it was transformed into a hotel at the beginning of the 20th century and became especially favoured by Brits seeking refuge from their unbearably dank winters.

The family that owns the hotel has always had links to the art world, and this passion is reflected in the building's interior. In 1987 they took on a project quite radical for the times, the chambre d'artistes – in which every year they have a different artist design the interior of one the hotel's rooms. One of the first artists was Ben, who lives in Nice himself and is well known on the French art scene for his pointed and often provoking texts. The room designed by him is a bright, orangey red, with printed writing even on the lamps and wooden door mouldings. A spark of humour can be found in every artist-designed room at the Hotel Windsor, making an overnight stay a rather exciting adventure. And the art is truly everywhere – in the lift, the hotel restaurant, the lobby, even out in the garden and lawn. The Hotel's outdoor grounds, by the way, are a wonderful oasis in the middle of the city, and there's even a swimming pool for those who don't feel like going down to the sea.
