La Cite de L’Architecture et du Patrimoine

Paris gets one more new museum. La Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (the city of architecture and heritage) was opened in the middle of September and is a dedication to French architecture - from the 12th century to the modern constructions of today. The museum is located in The Trocadéro square, in an East wing of Palais de Chaillot, which overlooks the Eiffel Tower. The site was once a home of museum of French Monuments. This $ 111 million dollar project has been carried out in the course of 10 years and its architect is Jean-Francois Bodin. The museum hosts three galleries, an architecture institute and a library comprising 45 000 books. With a total of 23 000 square meters it deservedly can be called the biggest museum of architecture in the world. In its main gallery, Galerie des Moulages, with its centerpiece element - glass roof - contains the most outstanding samples of Medieval, Gothic and Renaissance churches and many scaled-down plaster models of facades, pillars and statues. Separate spaces are devoted to 12th - 16th century frescos and mural paintings. The third gallery, in its turn, is fully allotted to the modern architecture from the middle of the 19th to 21st century. Among other exhibits there is also an apartment replica of the legendary Le Corbusier apartment house in Marseilles - Cité Radieuse (1946-1952) and a replica of the New Caledonian Culture Centre by Renzo Piano, built in 1998. The new museum is an ideal place for its youngest visitors, too - it has a special room, where children can build their future abodes from Lego blocks and other materials.
Along with permanent exposition also temporary exhibitions are held in some of Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine halls.
From 11th of October until 27th of January, 2008 museum will simultaneously offer two exhibitions. La Villa de Mademoiselle B, where nine women architects are invited to share their vision of the House of the Future, creating witty allusions to the Barbie doll house and accessories; and the projects of the prestigious Award for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe 2007, presenting such names as Norman Foster, Zaha Hadidas, Jean Nouvel and others.
