Ma Cocotte

Crisis-hit Europe is currently pausing with glamorous projects and promoting democratic, worn around the edges chic, an illusory authenticity or a radical escape instead. Ma Cocotte café-restaurant is the very embodiment of this trend. It is located in the remote suburb of Saint-Ouen in Paris near the well-known Saint-Ouen flea market. Being the largest of its kind, it spans over nearly 7 hectares and gathers about 1700 sellers of all sorts of rubbish and treasures. Although "cocotte" means a stew-pot in French, it is oftentimes used as an endearment word among family members. That is exactly the way how Philippe Starck has envisioned it - like eating hot soup at one's granny on a late Sunday morning. Ma Cocotte features an industrial canteen space with an authentic old garage door leading into it. Its décor resembles an eclectic mixture, seemingly borrowed from the nearby flea market. They even say that most of its furniture is gathered in the radius of 80 meters around it. There are lots of books, chairs, painted and nude, lamps, custom-made and found in the vicinity. Surreal photos adorn the walls and everything is intended to melt away any sense of time and space. The canteen features traditional, old-style French bistort cuisine this time presented by Yannick Papin, a chef known to be linked with Le Bon, the first restaurant designed by Starck. It has an air of a roadside tavern about it, and everyone with steaming soup bowls in front of them, from flea market combers to sellers, and from local Parisians to tourists, feels equally relaxed there.
There is one element, however, in which Starck, known for being the greatest showman of public bathrooms, remains faithful to his style. Ma Cocotte's sparkling white bathroom with white hand basins and taps resembling stylized plumbing pipes is a perfect proof to that.
