The Shakespeare and Company Bookshop

This is the bookshop Henry Miller once dubbed "the wonderland of books". Actually, it's more like a little book club - a multitude of second-hand, new and even very rare volumes. They are everywhere: on the floor, on the shelves - tattered and dusty, a real treasure-house. The front door is covered in notes written by people looking for a flat or renting one, searching for a travel companion, etc. Shakespeare and Co was opened in 1951, and George Whitman, the 91 years old owner of the bookshop, is a true legend in the world of books. There was a time when Mr Whitman could be found in his bookshop practically every single day, chatting with his customers (Anaïs Nin and many other well-known figures among them); he has retired since. A brilliant location for a bookshop - just opposite Notre Dame de Paris. Shakespeare and Co is open daily, midday to midnight.
