Sofia Melnikova's Fantastic Douqan

Being the most hard-to-find eatery in the city, this fact alone makes it also one of the most sought-after. It is located, theoretically, in the courtyard of the State Museum of Literature, which itself seems to be a corner that time itself has forgotten – besides the guard at the door, you're not very likely to meet another living soul here (that is, if you don't count the spooky busts of classic Georgian authors lining the entrance to the courtyard).

When the Museum is closed, you can enter the lunchroom through the backdoor, which, even though it is bright yellow, you probably won't be able to find. But if you actually do manage to find Sofia Melnikova's Fantastic Douqan, be prepared for what the locals call the best hinkhali in the city, as prepared by real mountain cooks (or so they say). People's opinions on hinkhali tend to differ (as they do on any subject), but it truly is worth trying the ones made here. In addition, the atmosphere here is undeniably vibrant – a chaotic mix of both bohemian and Georgian colours and styles, but as cosy as cosy can be.
