Currently, Ostel is one of the most spoken about hotels in Berlin. From the very day of its opening on May 1, the International Workers' Solidarity Day, it's been reviewed by almost every single self-respecting mass media. Ostel is a quotation from the past, moreover, from not so distant one - the German Democratic Republic. It is a budget hotel, the interior of which is a very image of the former DDR standard flats. Vintage style socialism-era buffets, wallpaper design, monotonous beyond endurance, iron beds, coffee tables, short curtains, just touching windowsills, and many other characteristic to that time features. All the furniture pieces are authentic, gathered in flee-markets or neighboring apartment houses. Ostel is located in Mitte area, not far from the East Side Gallery, and occupies a typical socialism-era block house, with its name Ostel in red color painted strait on the wall. Its lobby is adorned with four communist party leaders' portraits and four clocks, respectively, showing Moscow, Berlin, Peking and Havana time. The time has sopped in 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. In Ostel one can find such "souvenirs" as the round DDR chocolate stamps as well as authentic toilet paper. Only the mattresses, bed linen and plumbing are all fully modern - from the merciless capitalism-era.
A double room costs 59 Euro, a DDR apartment - 35 Euro, simple „Pioneer camp" rooms with bunk beds for up to 6 persons - 9 Euro per person.
