Without a doubt, the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf is one of the most interesting museums in the city, providing informative materials in a contemporary and interactive manner. The museum was inaugurated in 1993 and offers an exciting overview of the development of "moving picture" technology.

The exposition begins with a Pantheon of Film History, which is devoted to a number of early Russian, Polish, Japanese, Italian, American and, of course, German film directors, including Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog and Düsseldorf native Wim Wenders. Various photographs grace the pantheon's cupola ceiling, while short movie excerpts can be viewed on interactive video columns.

One then enters the Movie Cult - Movie Theatre room, which is devoted to the experience of movie-viewing. Cinema posters of Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman line the walls, while in the centre is a model of New York's Roxy Theatre. With room for 6200 viewers, the Roxy Theatre was the world's largest film venue during the age of silent movies. The replica of a mobile movie theatre dating from 1910 can also be seen, along with a number of famous movie costumes and various souvenirs, including Charlie Chaplin memorabilia, Star Wars figurines and Walt Disney character toys.

One of the expositions on the second floor focuses on the evolution of shadow puppets, revealing how such cut-outs permitted a type of "onscreen" viewing that preceded the cinema in various parts of the world. As a continuation of this tradition, the museum screens cartoon films made with shadow puppets by German director Lotte Reiniger during the 1920s.

Further on in the Palace of Illusions, the secret of special effects that were used in 17th-century "light paintings" is revealed with the press of a button, which changes the back lighting of a painting and allows different parts of it to glow, turning day into night and vice versa.

Another room on the second floor provides an insight into the development of movie cameras and projecting equipment, showing how camera angles and editing can replicate or reinvent reality. A separate room on the third floor is devoted to sound effects, while next door lies a film studio where the movie-filming process is faithfully imitated.

The Blue Screen exposition lets you try out various computer-generated special effects on your own. On the fourth and top floor is the Kaiserpanorama, a black, ten-sided tower, through which one can look at black-and-white travel photographs in 3D format. Invented in 1880, it was popular in Germany until the 1930s.

Completing the visit is an extensive library with films, cinema posters and photographs, as well as a Black Box Theatre, which screens movies from various periods.
