MUSEUM OF APPLIED ARTS / (MAK)

The Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts, regarded as one of the world's most significant museums of the kind, was founded in 1877. The museum houses an excellent collection of applied arts, spanning five thousand years in the history of different cultures and including examples of European decorative art dating from the 10th to 21st centuries, design, book art, graphic art, Islamic and Far East art. The works included in the collection display unique aesthetic quality and a diversity of brilliant techniques. The new building of the museum, now famous worldwide, was designed in 1985 by the American architect Richard Meier and allowed the original collection to be expanded with examples of product and information design. By using sidelights, Meier created the effect of making the interior appear lived-in, making the lighting part of the museum display. To enhance the homey feel of the museum, the building is divided into modestly-sized rooms - a fact that adds a new dimension to the historical exhibits.
