The New Extension of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt

The New Extension of the Städel Museum in Frankfurt

By far one of the most brilliant museum projects in Germany, the new extension of the Städel Museum is like an embodiment of Alice's adventures in Art Land. Visibly marked solely by white-tinted glass portholes in the green lawn of the museum's courtyard, the whole of the annex is submerged under the ground.

As you enter the subterranean maze-like space, the feeling is slightly surreal: daylight penetrates the rooms through the white skylights (there are 195 of them, varying in size from1.5 to 2.5 metres in diameter) and the spaciousness and incredible airiness of the building completely counterbalances any sense of being under the ground. In all, the exhibition rooms total 3000 square metres in area, doubling the museum's exhibition space.

The new extension is completely dedicated to contemporary art (starting with the post-war years); its holdings are based on the core of the extensive collections owned by Deutsche Bank and DZ Bank, on permanent loan to the museum. DZ Bank has contributed 220 photographs while Deutsche Bank, the owner of one of the world's most prestigious art collections, has lent the museum 600 works of art. The situation is also unique in that the Städel Museum has thus acquired a collection it could never afford to purchase. The opening exhibition features some 330 pieces: paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and installations. Pablo Picasso; Gerhard Richter; Cindy Sherman; Yves Klein; Lucio Fontana: Francis Bacon; Alberto Giacometti - these are but a few of the great artists represented here.

The architectural image of the new annex was designed by schneider+schumacher architectural firm from Frankfurt. One of the most prominent art museums in Germany, the Städel Museum was founded in 1816 by the banker and art collector Johann Friedrich Städel. The museum's extensive collection is dedicated to 14th-20th-century European art.
