Heimat

Author: Anothertravelguide.com0 COMMENTS

Heimat, a small and locally popular restaurant, is situated in Berliner Strasse, one of Frankfurt's main arteries. It is housed in a shop conversion, a 1956 concrete building - an epitome of the typical 1950s architecture. Some of the original elements have been retained, including the exposed concrete roof. As a result, the touch of the industrial style is just enough to add a certain flavour and colour while losing nothing of the cosiness. The place is tiny, with room for only twenty or so persons distributed between the tables and the bar, so some of the preparation takes place in full view. You can watch an elderly gentleman slice your ham and carefully arrange it on your plate. More serious cooking isn't visible, but sous-chefs do put on the final touches before you, expertly working the oven and fixing mistakes. They may make mistakes, but the food is excellent and you don't feel like you're in a robotic world at all. Heimat can get packed, even on Monday evenings. Reservations are a must.
