Every city has its special addresses that, occasionally, become a trip within a trip. The restaurant Le Canard Nouveau is definitely such a place. An oasis in the urban cityscape of Hamburg, it is found in a building engineered by the well-known architect Meinhard von Gerkan, and right next to his office. In summer, the most sought-after tables are on the terrace, one side of which is a forest of papyrus, while the other provides a panoramic view of the harbour and the Elbe River. The restaurant sits on a hill, so that as you lunch, you can watch the freighters slide by, all the while enjoying the aesthetics on your plate, as well as the vibrancy of the urban panorama. As the huge and sometimes overloaded ships glide by, an unbelievable lightness and peace sets in. The restaurant's interior is classically elegant and, thanks to the dominance of light-coloured wood, warm and comforting.

The restaurant's head chef, Ali Güngörmüs, who is of Turkish ancestry, has earned the establishment a Michelin star ever since 2006. Le Canard Nouveau's menu proves, once again, that the best things are actually very simple. This simplicity, in its purest form, is also the restaurant's greatest achievement. The kitchen at Le Canard Nouveau embodies the traditions of classic gastronomy - no challenging experiments or extravagances; everything is the way that it should be - just the best ingredients and the touch of a skilled chef. For instance, the sardine appetizer is lightly marinated, and just as lightly heated, ensuring that the fish haven't lost a bit of their fresh taste. Accordingly, the texture of the lobster soup is as soft as that of the legendary Giolitti ice cream in Rome. Pure pleasure! Furthermore, the surrounding peaceful environment lets you forget, for a moment, that you are actually in a metropolis, Germany's third largest city.
