Peter Lauer
Peter Lauer comes from the Saar and that says it all. Previously, the region was named Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, after three important river valleys where wine is produced, but this was shortened to Mosel in 2007. Nevertheless, certain differences have still been preserved among the valleys. Germany's most outstanding vineyards are considered to be specifically in the Saar's vicinity. With the Saar being a little higher than the Mosel, the climate is cooler and this affects the character of the wine as well. However, the weather can be quite capricious and not every harvest is a good one. In good years, Saar wines are known for their balanced character and distinct citrus notes, more so than classical Mosel wines.
The Peter Lauer winery is located at Ayl and has been owned by the same family for four generations. There's also a small hotel and a gourmet restaurant (Weinhaus Ayler Kupp) with a peaceful terrace enclosed by trees, making Peter Lauer a great stopping off point while visiting the Mosel area.

Fritz Haag
The prestigious wine from Fritz Haag has been presented with a five-grape ranking by the Gault Millou wine guide and is one of the most respectable names in the German wine world, with a higher price than other Mosel wines. The winery is located in the Brauneberg district and its wines were even enjoyed by Napoleon. Olivier Haag's family, the current owner of Fritz Haag, has been involved in winemaking since 1605. Some of the Fritz Haag vineyards are located in a distinctly steep cliff, which makes these grapes among the hardest to grow in the world. In addition, only Riesling grapes are grown in these conditions, giving the wine strong mineral notes and a character that can't be confused with any other. The grapes are picked by hand in several phases.

Markus Molitor
This is one of the extraordinary wineries of the Mosel region. When Markus Molitor took it over from his father in 1984, he was only 20 years old. And as the winery had already been in the family for eight generations, he decided to return to its roots and the historical methods of making wine, believing that a wine's character has to embody the terroir from which it originated. Among other things, he has also gradually moved away from stainless steel cisterns, replacing them with gigantic oak barrels. Some of the vines in the more than 95-hectare territory are already respectable "seniors" - over 100 years old. The majority of the area is devoted to Riesling grapes, although Pinot Noir is also grown.

Willi Schaefer
The Willi Schaefer winery is located in the very centre of the Mosel area, in the Berkasel-Graach district. It is tiny (only 3.5 hectares), but special in terms of its quality and is favoured by collectors. The winery is famous for its classic, elegant Mosel Riesling wines that can be enjoyed young, but age outstandingly as well.

The Karthäuserhof winery can be found in the Ruwer River Valley, not far from where the river meets the Mosel. Initially the winery belonged to Carthusian monks, who obtained the property at the gateway to the Eitelsbach village in 1335. The monks managed the winery and its vineyards for many centuries. During the French Revolution, Eitelsbach came under French control and in 1811, the winery was sold at an auction in Paris for 62 500 francs to French army general-intendant Valentin Leonardy, a keen wine lover. Among other things, he immediately began to decorate his apartments with special tapestries ordered from Lyons. The property was then inherited by his daughter and later by one of her 12 children. This heir combined wine-growing with his work in the Prussian parliament for 30 years.

At that time, Karthäuserhof wines cost unbelievable sums at auctions and gave the winery the status of being one of the region's most prominent wineries. Currently, the sixth generation of the family is operating the winery. Its current winemaker was formerly given the title of best winemaker in Germany by the prestigious Der Feinschmecker gourmet magazine. The winery is also special for the fact that the entire winemaking process is conducted within the winery itself - starting from the gathering and crushing of the grapes to the filling of the bottles with wine. In this way, the process is fully controlled and wine of the highest quality is guaranteed. Mostly Riesling grapes are grown at Karthäuserhof, with only small quantities of Pinot Blanc.
