Rebholz
Rebholz is a third-generation winemaking family, which, in spite of the changing winds of fashion in the wine industry, has always maintained a faithfulness to tradition. The cornerstone of Rebholz's philosophy is absolute purity of style and the highest possible quality, while emphasizing that a respect for nature is also important in the creation of fine wine. As nature is often capricious, it is necessary to be sufficiently creative so as to deal with this. In a way, Rebholz is both conservative and innovative, devoting its efforts to a ceaseless quest for the perfect wine. The wine producer specializes in dry wines, which among wine connoisseurs are known for their excellent aging properties. The best Pinot Noir wines take at least five years to reach their optimal form. Rebholz wines have won many awards, including the highest rating of five grapes from the influential Gault Millau 2011 guide.

Friedrich Becker
Friedrich Becker is one of the best Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) producers in Germany, known for its full-bodied and elegant wines. Part of the vineyards have been specially planted in rocky lime soil. Even though a portion of the vineyards can be found in Alsace (France), the wines are allowed to be classified as German. The 2009 Pinot Noir Trocken was nominated as the years' best Pinot Noir by the Gault Millau edition devoted to Germany.

Knipser
Knipser is annually placed on the list of best German red wine producers and its white wines are also highly acclaimed. The winery is managed by two brothers and is located in the small town of Laumersheim, which is also known for its bountiful autumn apple harvest. In 2009, Gault Millau Deutschland awarded Knipser the title of winery of the year.

Von Winning / Dr. Deinhard
Von Winning is a name worth remembering. The winery has a colourful history. Founded in 1849, it initially bore the owner's name, Dr. Deinhard. When the owner died, the winery was taken over by his daughter and her husband, captain Leopold von Winning, with the resulting change in name. The early 20th century was a golden age for von Winning, which also became one of the founders of VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates), the German wine association. Later, with the owners changing once more, the winery no longer had the right to use the von Winning name and it became known as Dr. Deinhard. However, since 2008 the winery's prestigious line of Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) again bears the von Winning name. The von Winning Riesling wines are excellent and cannot be mistaken for any other wine. The winery also has a restaurant called Leopold, where the menu and restaurant interior perfectly complement the wines on offer. Von Winning is a true 21st century winery - modern, open to experimentation, while at the same time having a clearly perceptible traditional foundation.

Dr. Bürklin-Wolf
The Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is the largest family-owned windery in Germany with 86 hectares of grapes. Its seat and its tasting room are in an elegant villa in the small town of Washenheim. Though the winery has 500 years of history, it is still among the most innovative brands in the Pfalz. Biodynamic technologies that make the wine organic have been in use for some time. No pesticides or herbicides, or any other chemicals, are used to battle pests or nature - natural solutions are sought instead. The skins of grapes and the seeds are used for compost, winter crops are planted to keep the soil fresh, and the wines are bottled in harmony with the phases of the moon. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf uses no tractors - instead, two horses are used, their hooves not compacting the soil like tyres would. The winery is a living organism, and all of this is done with virtuoso care. When we visit the tasting room, there's only one other couple there, along with a massive dog at their feet. The beast doesn't prick up its ears when the next bottle is uncorked. A rumpled but well-dressed man also enters. Two bottles are placed side by side - the vineyards their grapes came from are only 100 metres apart, the vintage is the same... but the terroir is totally different. One came from sandstone and limestone soil, the other from volcanic basalt. Terroir is indeed everything!
