Periscope Hotel

While the coolly laconic minimalist style of the Periscope hotel looks perfect in photographs posted on the website, expect to feel a bit disappointed in real life: sadly, the effect seems to have been achieved the cheap way - think laminate floors and a bar with bright orange tables that look like college desks (one of which is inexcusably wonky, and no-one is making even the slightest attempt of repairing it). And it doesn't end here: fake bamboo and orange juice out of a packet (if you require freshly squeezed juice, you will have to pay extra). No view to speak of, unless you are staying in the penthouse suite with a rooftop Jacuzzi and a panoramic view of Athens. The ceiling (walls) of the 22 rooms are adorned with urban Athens landscapes. The standard rooms are small and should be avoided if at all possible. Although Periscope is recommended by practically all existing style guidebooks, it is hard to describe it as cosy. And yet there is a positive side to the hotel with all its faults: it is one of the very few accommodations available in the district of Kolonaki which is definitely worth a special visit. And that's not all - the special feature to which the hotel owes its name is a periscope or a rotating camera placed on the rooftop: it allows you to watch the panorama of Athens in all its splendour on the plasma screen at the hotel bar - including the intriguing goings-on on the balconies of quite a few buildings: an opportunity to indulge the secret voyeur lurking in most of us...
