St. George Lycabettus

You may find there is too much of design in this hotel, particularly as you step inside the lift cabin all aglow in little lights like some sort of a disco cubicle caught in a time warp - or in the lobby dominated by black and gold. And yet the Athenians are sincerely proud of this hotel and, if the view is a priority (and you don't feel like staying at the grande dame of Athens, meaning the Grande Bretagne hotel), St George Lycabettus is a serious option to consider. The hotel is located on Mount Lycabettus and boasts a fabulous view of the mountain and the Acropolis. To enhance the experience, the designers have provided a rooftop swimming pool - not to mention the restaurant and the Sky Bar: a glass of wine there is a must. At first glance the bar seems as eclectically designed as the hotel itself: you would be hard pressed to find even two identical chairs there, and the styles vary from laconic minimalism to baroque kitsch. A couple of minutes later, however, you realise that, in its own fashion, the place embodies the ambience of the whole ambivalent city where you feel so surprisingly well. At night the bar seems to attract a distinctly trendy crowd.
St George Lycabettus opened in the mid-1970s and underwent its first ever smartening up shortly before the Olympic Games. Perhaps a slight touch up wouldn't go amiss now. If you are staying here, do choose a room with a view of the Acropolis.
