The Brera Art Gallery is one of the foremost museums in Milan and houses one of the most significant art collections in Italy. It is located in the Brera Palace (Palazzo Brera), which once served as a convent.
The gallery collection has a number of masterpieces by Italian artists from the 14th to the 20th century, including Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, Giovanni Bellini's Pietà, Piero della Francesca's Brera Madonna altarpiece, Andrea Mantegna's peculiar Lamentation over the Dead Christ, Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus, Donato Bramante's Christ at the Column, and many others.
The gallery also has a fine collection of 19th-century paintings, of which the Kiss by Francesco Hayez is among the most notable. Hayez was a leading representative of Milan's Romanticist school of art.
