The Milan Cathedral (Duomo) is the largest and most majestic example of Gothic architecture in Italy, as well as the fourth largest cathedral in the world. It houses the world's largest collection of marble sculptures, and the golden Madonna that graces the top of its spire - affectionately called the Madunina (Little Madonna) by the Milanese - has become one of the main symbols of the city.
The Cathedral's museum was inaugurated in 1953 and displays a large number of items associated with the edifice's 700-year history, including paintings, sculptures, façade design sketches, ornaments and tapestries, stain glass windows, restoration documents and significant religious objects. One of the most interesting exhibit pieces is a wooden model of the cathedral dating from the early 16th century.
Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) - located across from the south side of the Duomo, this exhibit hall always displays interesting thematic exhibitions.
