Osteria Ago e Rita, Torre del Benaco

Osteria Ago e Rita, Torre del Benaco

One of the most vibrant eateries on the shores of Lake Garda, and doubly true for the area around Verona. The owners, Ago and Rita, were once married, but even though their domestic lives have parted long since, they still run their successful business as partners; if one didn't know any better, the couple's easy and efficient working relationship would never indicate anything but wedded bliss. The inside of the restaurant is simpler than simple – a regular Italian lunchroom with a shot of Indian (Rita is fond of going on ayurvedic retreats). The menu is simple, too: tables are served with a basket filled with fresh crudites, various dips and sauces, salami, cheese, bread, and if one wishes – pasta; nothing fancy or superfluous here. At Osteria Ago e Rita, the main thing is the atmosphere: here, dancing on the tables during Sunday afternoons is just as natural and organic as brushing one's teeth in the morning. And for more than 30 years now, the party is always begun by Ago himself. Serving as the start signal is the Italian pop hit Frustami, and then it's as if Ago has lit the wick of a party bomb – everyone goes wild and crazy and has the time of their life; and sometimes they're even completely sober, to boot. The entire canon of Italian pop-music serves as the soundtrack, and everyone who can move a muscle, does the hustle – from toddlers to pensioners. A plate or two may break here and there, but that goes with the territory. In any case, after a visit to Osteria Ago e Rita, you won't feel the need for a movie night for quite some time!
