Daile Theatre (Dailes teātris)

Nothing about the rather typical, post-war modernism of the Daile Theatre building would suggest that its construction was a long and complicated process that lasted nearly two decades. Already in the late 1950s, the young architect Marta Staņa won a competition for its auditorium. Although an architect more to the liking of the Communist Party was soon attached to the team, this became Marta Staņa's life's work. Against all odds, she somehow managed to transcend the bleak, Soviet era of Latvia's history.
The legendary theatre director Eduards Smiļģis also made a major contribution to the edifice by designing the innovative stage and other spaces. The Daile Theatre is one of the few buildings to retain its external appearance and some of its internal elements from the Soviet period. It is here that one can still see how the Riga Functionalist School developed as an important branch of the International style of architecture.
