Day care centre for the homeless and underprivileged

The day care centre for the homeless and underprivileged on Katoļu iela is an unusual example of community architecture in Latvia, for, unlike other public buildings in the country, this edifice displays playful creativity in its design.

Its shiny, metal sheet roofing and siding makes this compact building appear solid and robust. The rooms are rationally laid out to ensure the most efficient use of space. Architect Mikus Lejnieks wanted the centre's asymmetrically built windows to fulfil not only a practical, but also an emotional function - especially during the late evening hours, when the building shines forth like a brightly lit Christmas tree.

The surrounding neighbourhood near the railway embankment has a variety of stone and wood buildings erected during the 19th and 20th centuries, which offer a perspective of Riga that differs from the city centre.
